Momentum Builds for Mass Protests Against the FTAA

Press Briefing 9 AM: Organizers call on City to uphold the First Amendment in Miami this week.
As momentum builds for massive protests against the proposed Free Trade Area
of the Americas, representatives of a cross section of groups from
across the country are uniting to broadcast their opposition to the Free
Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
Representatives from labor and environmental movements, community
groups, and spokes people from the direct action community will outline
their plans for events to educate, organize and take action stop the
FTAA from becoming law. The myriad groups and individuals will also
express their right to free speech, assembly and protest this week,
despite the heavy hand of Miami law enforcement and the unconstitutional
“Parade Ordinance.”
Protest activities ranging from educational teach-ins, to marches, to
informational leaflets and non-violent direct action, reflect the range
and depth of hemispheric opposition to FTAA, an agreement that puts
corporate profit before human rights, democracy, and the planet.
Tours of the welcome center will be available when art making, trainings and
organizing are under way Tuesday morning. This is the only opportunity to access the Welcome Center this week.
The Mobilization to Stop the FTAA is a decentralized,
“affinity group”-based structure, made up of people from all walks of
life who will engage in nonviolent direct action against the Free Trade
Area of the Americas (FTAA) ministerial meetings in the streets of Miami
this week. The mobilization is acting in solidarity with marches,
educational events and people's movements for democracy, peace, ecology
and justice across the hemisphere.
